Why it is important for students to carry lightweight school bags?

Did you read the news about the centre fixing the minimum weight of school bags for students? Though a lot has been said and written about students carrying heavy school bags, it is now that concrete action is being taken to lighten the load of the children.

How do heavy school bags affect the child?
There has been a lot of study about the ill effects of students carrying very heavy bags to school. According to the study, heavy school bags affect the child’s posture and have a detrimental effect on the growth and development of the spine. When children, especially younger children, carry heavy bags filled with heavy books, there are high chances of spine deformities.

In order to compensate for the heavy weight on their backs, children tend to lean forward. The straps of the bags pull the muscles of the shoulder causing scars and sometimes muscle pull. Improper posture while walking affects the nervous system and makes the spine vulnerable to injuries. Moreover, the bones are not completely strong in younger children. So, there are many chances of ortho problems if children carry heavy bags for long durations.

What is the weight limit of school bags that students can carry?
Based on research studies and recommendations of experts in the field, the centre has come up with a basic guide that outlines that maximum weight students of different classes can carry.

Students of grades 1 and 2 should not carry more than 1.5 kg of weight while students of classes 3 to 5 can carry school bags weighing from 2 to 3 kgs. While students of Class 6 & 7 can carry bags weighing up to 4 kg, it is 500 grams more for students of class 8 & 9. As per the HRD’s guidelines, students of class 10 can carry up to 5 kg.

Get the right school bag for your child
Don’t just buy any of the school bags available online for your child. It is not just the weight of the school bag that affects their spine and posture. The design of the school bag also plays a major role in reducing the problem. The bag should be designed in such a way that the straps of the bag don’t press on the shoulders leading to stress and muscle pull. Plus, the bag design should allow for equal distribution of the weight, so that there is less strain on the child’s back. You should also consider the material, durability, stitch and other factors before you buy a school bag for your child. Keep all these points in mind when you go online shopping for school bags, so you get the best school bag for your child.
